In this adaptation of 19th century Eça de Queiroz’s novel to nowadays, Father Amaro tries to save lost souls in a suburban, marginal, violent neighbourhood in Lisbon. Good intentions move his soul, but other senses start waking up, especially when he meets Amélia: sensual, provocative and sleeping in the bedroom next door… This film marked decisively the film industry in Portugal, becoming the most popular Portuguese film ever.
